Tomorrow the Nationwide Conference hold a Commercial Managers Meeting at Pride Park, Derby. General Manager John Blackwell and Chief Executive Kevan Muggleston will represent Boston United.

York Street, Academy

8 May For at least the next two seasons Boston United intend to remain at York Street, this will be reviewed later in line with current and future stadium requirements. Chairman, Pat Malkinson, believes that sometime in the future Boston United will have to move to a new stadium as it may not be possible to adapt York Street to meet future stadium regulations.

The whole of the York Street Stand will now become the away supporters area and work will be done to the dressing rooms, directors area and terracing barriers to bring them up to the required standard.

Tonight the Academy have defeated Lincoln United 2-1 to win the Jackson Workwear Charity Cup again. After 90 minutes the score was 1-1, the Academy then scored a golden goal 10 minutes into extra time.

Boston United have applied to enter a reserve team in the Central Conference League next season.

Following a meeting with the Football Licensing Authority on Thursday 3 May 2001, in order to achieve an acceptable ground capacity in line with the club's ambitions, effective from the 2001/2002 season the York Street Stand will be designated the away supporters area. This means that the Director's Box, Visiting Director's Box and the Match Sponsors/Guests Area will have to be moved to the original area intended when the Stantons Stand was built. As a consequence, Boston United have to regretfully advise that Red Block Rows F, G and H numbers 35 to 46 inclusive and Yellow Block Rows G and H numbers 1 to 12 inclusive will not be available for renewal. Boston United apologise for any inconvenience caused by the late change to the Season Ticket renewal procedures.

Promotion Places

20 April Conference to Discuss Football League Offer of Two Promotion Places

The Nationwide Conference has reviewed the Football League’s offer of two promotion places at a meeting of its Board of Directors yesterday. The eight man Board has requested an urgent meeting with the League to negotiate the proposal and agree a fair and acceptable financial arrangement for relegated clubs. The talks are aimed at introducing the new promotion structure next season.

As part of the negotiation process, meetings with the Football Association – who have been involved with the discussions from the initial stages - are scheduled next week to help clear the path for increased promotion between the Conference and the Football League. Additional talks with the FA Premier League are also scheduled in order to determine a universally accepted formula for calculating ‘Parachute Payments’ to clubs relegated at all levels.

Conference Chairman Bill King stated: "The proposition for increased promotion places to the Football League is now fully accepted in the game. The next stage is to visit the parachute payment policy more carefully and arrive at a policy that sits comfortably at all levels of football – from the Premier League to the Football League, from the League to the Conference. We have a very tight deadline to get this done in time for next season and the Conference, League and FA must work closely to get everything finalised ahead of our AGMs this summer."

Forum

20 January At the Forum last night the panel was: John Blackwell, Trevor Quow, Steve Evans and Pat Malkinson; the major announcements were:

  1. Boston United will be full-time with effect from Monday 9 July 2001; this is dependent upon the club remaining in the Nationwide Conference for next season.
  2. There are plans to either re-develop the York Street Stand or re-locate the club to a new site. The ground was inspected by the Football League two months ago and was given a B grade, even though there are other grounds in the Conference with worse facilities which have an A Grade. An A grade is required to enter the Football League and the LDV vans Trophy, therefore, at the moment if Boston United won the Conference they would not be promoted and they finish in the top eight of the Conference they would not enter the LDV vans Trophy next season. Part of the Football League criteria is that all four sides of the ground are self-supporting for turnstiles, toilets, catering facilities, etcetera, and the Stantons Stand is blocked to the outside world by the Matalan store. The inspection required the turnstiles, crush barriers, perimeter fencing, toilets and dressing rooms to be improved. KMB Architects of Kirton have drawn up plans to re-build the York Street Stand at a cost of £1.5m. It is not possible to use the new Athletics Stadium, which is to be built on the Boardsides.
  3. There will be full-time YTS players next season.
  4. Next season there will be a First Team, Reserves, Academy and YTS.
  5. Sky Television is planning to broadcast a weekly programme about the Conference commencing on Thursday 1 February until the end of March.

The Conference are urgently seeking a joint meeting with the Football Association and The Football League for the purpose of reaching a satisfactory conclusion that allows additional promotion from the Conference at the end of the season 2001/2002. It will see over 1000 children and young people a year attend a new study centre at the York Street ground in a bid to boost their literacy and numeracy skills and 'learn how to learn'. Other partners in the project are Lincolnshire County and Boston Borough Councils and the Boston Standard.

United's successful bid for over £350,000 in grants means it is joining the big names in football - nearly 30 Premiership and Nationwide Division One football clubs already operate Playing for Success study support centres but the Pilgrims are the only Non-League side in the UK to win a grant. Out of 43 bids from sports clubs and Local Education Authorities in the country this year, the Pilgrims' scheme was one of only 10 to receive a full-scale award. It is the only sports club on the list that is not fully professional - others include the Bradford Bulls, Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves from rugby league, Somerset and Durham cricket and Gloucestershire rugby union.

Boston United manager Steve Evans said the success of the bid was 'magnificent'. "I did not think we would attract enough interest with our bid to beat, for example a club like Lincoln City so this is excellent news," Mr Evans said. "We gave it our best shot and this is just one of the things we are trying to do to help the whole community, with all age groups, people with handicaps, the under-privileged. It's magnificent that the Government and Mr Blunkett in particular, saw that our bid was the best."

Community literacy co-ordinator Anne Dorrian who helped lead the bid for the Lincolnshire LEA, said it was 'absolutely brilliant' that the Boston United scheme had won through. Of the youngsters who will take part, she said: "This will not be an easy option for those who are disaffected. The young people will be expected to attend on a voluntary basis and in their own time, showing both a commitment to learning and improvements in their performance." She was delighted that children on the scheme, as well as learning literacy, numeracy, IT and study skills, would receive another bonus - free tickets to see all the Pilgrims home games.

Tim Hartley, editor of the Boston Standard, said the newspaper was 'proud to be part of this imaginative venture' which would benefit many youngsters in the local community. As part of the project the Standard will run a Young Reporters initiative as well as regular features on the children and young people taking part in Playing for Success. The pupils will have a chance to write match reports for the newspaper and items for the match day programmes.

Nine secondary and 22 primary schools will be targeted, 480 pupils a year will have the chance of attending formal sessions at the York Street study centre and over 1000 youngsters a year will be able to take part in separate 'open sessions' on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. It is hoped that staff will be recruited and the study centre established and equipped ready for an official opening in April 2001.

Hibernian

Steve Evans has said that Mark will only move if the price is right. Earlier this week Boston United turned down a bid in excess of £60,000 which was believed to be from a Bristol club, and Kidderminster Harriers have also expressed an interest.

It is also reported that in another incident a fellow Nationwide Conference manager has made an approach to two contracted Boston United players directly. Steve Evans was angered by the approach and if there is a repetition it will be reported to the Football Association and the Nationwide Conference, he also stressed that any enquiries must be to him and not directly to the players.

Scotland

28 June The Target has reported that Steve Evans has travelled to Scotland this week. Scottish First Division club Airdrie have gone into receivership and all of their players are available for a free transfer. There are two players in particular that Steve Evans believes could do a good job for Boston United in the Nationwide Conference.

The Paul Bastock Testimonial Fund committee comprises: Chairman, Rob Singleton; Secretary, Pauline Chapman; Treasurer, Barbara Singleton; Publicity Officer, Scott Dalton; General Committee, John Luffman, Jack Luffman, Chris Cook, Michael Small, Andy Robinson, Craig Singleton, Glen Chapman, Mark Dobney, Neil Walden and Andy Marriott. Over the next 12 months the committee are planning the following events: golf day, millionaire's night, Christmas and Spring dances, race evening, sportsman's dinner, various quizzes, and a high profile match against top opposition.

Boston United have announced that anyone who has been involved in the recent trouble in Belgium and Holland will not be welcome at York Street.

Rumours

22 June Steve Evans is looking to sign a further three players to complete the squad to begin the new season. It is rumoured that the targets include Simon Coleman (a central defender from: Southend United, Middlesbrough, Derby County and Bolton Wanderers), Kingsley Black (a left winger from: Grimsby Town, Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest and Luton Town) and Gary Patterson (a midfield player with Kingstonian).

At the Dinner Boston United received the Championship Shield from David Joyce of Dr Martens together with a permanent trophy, and Steve Evans received the Manager of the Year award.

Jackson, Tamworth

8 June Boston United are disappointed with the failure of their offer to Morecambe to sign Justin Jackson, the winner of the Nationwide Conference's Golden Boot award for scoring 29 goals last season. It is understood that Justin Jackson has today signed for Rushden & Diamonds for a fee in excess of £150,000, which makes Boston United's offer of £70,000 pale into insignificance. Boston United would like to thank Morecambe Football Club for their professionalism over the last few days in dealing with the offer.

Subject to confirmation, Boston United have arranged a friendly fixture away to Tamworth on Sunday 6 August with a 12.30pm kick off. After the match, the squad will travel south for three days of intensive training in the Aldershot area.

West Ham United 23 January 1987 to 9 August 1992

Simon was signed for Southend by Alvin Martin, a former colleague at West Ham, where he was rated one of the top young prospects, with a great touch and excellent technique.

The Target has reported that Boston United have offered Morecambe £70000 for Justin Jackson who was the leading goalscorer in the Nationwide Conference last season with 29 goals, further payments would be due linked to goals, appearances, etcetera. Steve Evans is interested in Mark Taylor of Hereford and Austin Barclay of Shrewsbury, and is also searching for another goalkeeper as cover for Paul Bastock.

Boston United are holding a Fans Forum and Quiz in the Social Club on Friday 16 June. The quiz will be in two parts with the forum in between the two rounds. Ian Stringfellow, Wisbech Town player/manager, has pledged that they will win the Dr Martens Eastern Division this season.

The following item has been re-produced from this week's Boston Standard

Boston United boss Steve Evans has blasted the scaremongers who spread rumours the Scot was about to join Conference club Stevenage Borough.

Evans said: "I have no time for people who use my name to rumour monger amongst Boston United fans. As far as I concerned, I have only started a job here - and I want to finish it - of making Boston United a major force in Non-League Football.

"At no time have I ever considered leaving this club, and that includes opportunities to coach in the Football League and manage other clubs in the Conference."

Academy Success

5 May Last night the Academy beat Lincoln United 3-2 to win the Jacksons Workwear Lincolnshire Charity Cup.

Team: Peter Cook, Alan Ross, Paul Trinder, James Fletcher, Andrew Markham, Joe Harris, Dane Thornton, Danny Harrison, Daryl Hunt, Anthony Elding, Glen Kill.

Substitutes (not used): Russell Murphy, Darren Tate, Dave Donohoe, Richard Elsom and Thomas Fielding.

The Boston United Academy team last night won the Lincs under 18 Charity Cup in a thrilling final at York Street. In front of a crowd of about 150 the Football For Life lads took the honours in a highly competitive and intense match. The quality of football was of a very high standard throughout as the Boston boys defeated their Lincoln counterparts by 3 goals to two.

Every one of the 11 were on top form as Cook's lads turned on the style. In midfield the contributions of Dane Thornton and man of the match Danny Harrison were immense as the young Pilgrims showed a level of technical ability that the visitors could not match.

The home side opened the scoring in the first minute when Darryl Hunt headed in a Harrison cross. Midway through the first half the lively and skillful Anthony Elding missed from close range after good work from Joe Harris, Andy Markham and Dane Thornton. On the stroke of half time Lincoln United equalised from the penalty spot with Academy keeper Peter Cook just failing to keep the ball out. Midway through the second period Danny Harrison scored with a free kick that Rivelino would have been proud of. With 15 minutes to go the tie seemed to be over when the busy and effective Glen Kill arrived at the back post to head home a Dane Thornton cross. Back came the visitors to grab a goal that meant that the Academy team were in for a very anxious last ten minutes. However, Trinder, Ross and Fletcher held firm and Chris Cook's men held on for a memorable victory.

This was the Academy's last match of the season, but the players remain at college until the beginning of July. The players return to Boston United in August and resume their college course in September.
