Mel Sterland b. 1/10/61 Player Manager

Mel joined the Pilgrims in May 1994 after leaving Leeds United, where his career was curtailed by an ankle injury. He had a distinguished playing career, joining Sheffield Wednesday as an apprentice and making 279 appearances, scoring 37 goals. He was then transferred to Glasgow Rangers, making 9 appearances before returning to Yorkshire, linking up with Howard Wilkinson at Leeds United, where he made 114 appearances, scoring 16 goals. He won one Full International cap against Saudi Arabia and also enjoyed 7 Under-21 plus several "B" International appearances.


Ronnie Reid Assistant Manager

Mel Sterland's first signing in the Summer of 1994 was Ronnie Reid, who returned to York Street for his third spell with the Pilgrims. During his playing career, Ronnie played for Chesterfield, Scarborough, Worksop Town and Boston United. He had two spells as manager at Stafford Rangers and was formerly assistant manager at York Street to George Kerr. For the past four seasons Ronnie has also been assistant manager of the England Semi-Professional squad.


Paul Bastock b. 19/5/70 Goalkeeper

Paul is starting his fourth season with the club. Has extensive experience with Cambridge United, Coventry City and Kettering Town. Paul is rightly regarded as one of the top keepers in non-league soccer. Recently married, he lives locally and is very popular amongst the home supporters who recognise his outstanding talent.


Martyn Bunce Goalkeeper

Local lad Martyn Bunce provides goal-keeping cover for the first team and has always acquitted himself well when called upon to do so. Although somewhat short for a keeper, he has excellent reflexes and is an outstanding shot-stopper.


Paul Casey b. 6/10/61 Defender

A firm favourite with the York Street fans. Paul re-joined the Pilgrims in July 1991 for a fee of 5,000 pounds after a spell with Lincoln City. Originally joined the club in 1982 from Sheffield United where he made 30 Football League appearnaces. Paul was a member of United's FA Trophy side in the 1985 final against Wealdstone. He then transferred to Lincoln City in April 1987 and helped them win promotion back into the Football League at the first attempt after their relegation the previous season


Gregg Fee b. 24/6/64 Defender

Re-joined the Pilgrims for the second time at the start of 1993-94 season. Gregg was originally signed from Kettering Town in 1986. He then moved onto Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of 20,000 pounds during the 1987-88 season. In four seasons at Hillsborough, Gregg made 26 first team appearances and had loan spells with Preston, Northampton and Orient before moving onto Mansfield Town in the 1990-91 season to make over sixty appearances in their colours.


Martin Hardy b. 12/12/62 Defender

Martin returned to York Street at the start of last season after a one season break at Matlock. He joined the Pilgrims from Worksop Town in 1988 for a fee of 10,000 pounds, going on to make 220 appearances and scoring 17 goals in his first spell at York Street. The former manager released him following United's relegation from the Vauxhall Conference. Martin has represented the Football Association and has also toured with Middlesex Wanderers.


Chris James b. 16/1/69 Defender

Chris was signed in July 1995 from Unibond Division One side, Worksop Town. has previously played for Matlock Town and Scarborough.


Daniel Marshall b. 18/12/75 Defender

Signed this season from Chesterfield. Previous club Notts County.


Gareth Price b. 21/2/70 Defender

Signed early in the season from Kettering Town. Previous clubs include Mansfield Town and Bury.


Richard Mason b. 5/6/77 Defender

Signed on loan from Sheffield Wednesday.


Steve Circuit b. 11/4/72 Midfield

Steve joined the Pilgrims in September 1993 from Halifax Town after spells with Sheffield United and Stafford Rangers. He quickly won the hearts of the supporters with his determined play and all-action style. Steve's father is a physio with First Division Sheffield United.


Steve Chambers b. 20/7/68 Midfield

Steve first signed for the Pilgrims in the 1992-93 season from Mansfield Town where he made over sixty appearances. Later had a loan spell at Gateshead. Started his career with Sheffield Wednesday. A broken ankle forced him to miss much of last season but a return to full fitness after Christmas saw him eventually complete the season at left back, putting in some great performances.


Steve Appleby b. 24/5/67 Midfield

Local lad Steve joined his home town club last season after previously playing in the Conference for kettering Town and captaining UCL side Bourne Town. Last season's "Player of the Year".


Simon Mills b. 16/8/64 Midfield TRANSFERRED TO MATLOCK TOWN

Signed on the eve of last season after leaving Port Vale. An experienced midfield player with around 340 Football League appearances. Has played for Sheffield Wednesday, York City and Port Vale.


Chris Cook b. 19/5/62 Forward

Local lad with over 350 games for United. He thought his first team days were over but Mel Sterland brought the second string's player manager back, after receiving a series of rave reports about Cook's performances, after a gap of four years. Has scored over 150 goals for the club.


Simon Grayson b. 21/10/69 Forward

Simon was signed from local rivals Gainsborough Trinity in December 1994 and scored a lot of goals in the latter part of the season. Previous experience with Witton Albion, Halifax and Sheffield FC.


Micky Nuttell b. 22/11/68 Forward

Returned on loan from Rushden & Diamonds, where he was top scorer in 1993/4. Previous clubs include Peterborough, Cheltenham, Wycombe Wanderers, Kettering and Dagenham and Redbridge.


Darren Munton Forward

Darren is in his fourth season with the club after initially joining Boston from UCL side Bourne Town. A regular goalscorer, Darren is equally at home playing down the centre or wide on the left. previous experience with Melton Town and Oakham town. He is also a talented cricketer. Has recently rejoined the club after a spell with Kings Lynn.


Andy Gray b. 8/8/75 Forward

Andy joined the club at the start of last season after pre-season trials. Although hampered by injury last term, he scored ten goals in only sixteen appearances. Now fully fit, his pre-season form has attracted a lot of interest from a host of Football League clubs.


Gary Brook b. 9/5/64 Forward TRANSFERRED TO HALIFAX TOWN

Signed in July 1995 after being released by Gainsborough Trinity where he was player manager. Previous experience with Scarborough, Blackpool, Newport County and Frickley Athletic.


Phil Brown b. 16/1/66 Forward

A very experienced striker who joined the pilgrims from Vauxhall Conference side Kettering Town where he was "Player of the Year" last season. He was also a member of Lincoln City's championship side when they won the Conference.


Mark Smith b. 19/12/61 Utility

Left sided player who was signed in July 1995 after being released by Third Division Scunthorpe United. With over 250 Football League appearances, he has appeared in the colours of Rochdale, Huddersfield Town, Grimsby and Scunthorpe.


Imre Varadi b. 8/7/59 Forward TRANSFERRED TO SCUNTHORPE UTD

Imre was signed at the start of the season from Mansfield Town. Has had a distinguished playing career including spells at Sheffield Utd, Everton, Newcastle Utd, Sheffield Wednesday, West Bromwich Albion, Manchester City, Leeds United, Luton Town, Oxford Utd, Rotherham and Mansfield Town.


Mark Phillips Forward RETURNED TO USA

Joined the Pilgrims this season from Ohio club XOGGZ. This 24 year old striker is the first ever American player signed by the Pilgrims.
