Roland (Roly) Depear Midfield (46-48)
Signed from Spalding Athletic. He had been offered a house and £7 a week
by Hull City, but he turned them down as he did not want to leave his job with
Spalding UDC. He was sold to Leeds United at the end of the 47/8 season for
£500, with an additional £300 due on completing ten games for
Leeds. He was sold by Leeds to Newport County for £8000 after playing
just five games. He later joined Shrewsbury Town and he played in their first
ever Football League game - a 0-0 draw against Scunthorpe United in August
1950. He went on to become player-manager at Bangor City playing in the
Cheshire League. Towards the end of his career he returned to Spalding and
played for Quadring in the Boston & District League. Born 10/12/1923 in
Spalding.
