Peterborough United 0-1 Pilgrims

Coca Cola League

Even dead cats bounce. So even a football manager whose career is as dead as Steve Evans' is can produce one surprise result at the end. With Asa Hall having ended his loan spell and returned to Birmingham, seventeen year old Richard Chinn was drafted into the squad to take a place on the subs' bench. There was very little to write about in the goal-less first half. Neither side created much in the way of chances. Peterborough looked good breaking down the right wing, but crosses were often much too close to Michel Kuipers. Any shots lacked pace or accuracy or both. The best chance of the half fell to Lawrie Dudfield, but the Boston striker failed to strike the ball when presented with a great opportunity from ten yards out. Peterborough began the second half producing lots of neat moves that came close to piercing the Boston defence and breaking the deadlock. Simon Rusk only lasted a few minutes into the half - he limped off with a knee injury and was replaced by Jamie Clarke. Every cloud has a silver lining, as the substitute put in a commanding performance, including scoring the only goal of the match.

Former Pilgrim Richard Logan just shot wide of the target after getting into a good position, then a clever flick by Tim Ryan put David Farrell in the clear down the left, but he wasted his opportunity by sending in a poor cross that was too long. At the other end Mark Tyler produced the save of the day when punching away a piledriver of a shot from Julian Joachim that looked destined for the top corner. On 69 minutes the winning goal was volleyed home by Jamie CLARKE. The ball fell nicely into his path as Boston broke forward and he picked his spot - wide to the right of the 'keeper. Peterborough threw everything forward in an attempt to find an equaliser, but the well organised Boston defence held firm. After the match Steve Evans said: "I think the referee gave a lot of fifty-fifties to the home side today and that's made it probably look as if they had more possession".
