Boston Town 0-4 Pilgrims

Friendly

Boston United began their pre-season campaign with a leisurely 4-0 victory against local opponents Boston Town. Played in bright sunshine and soaring temperatures, Boston United rustled up a different line-up for each half. Surprisingly, newly signed local hero Julian Joachim didn't make an appearance, but most of the other summer signings, a few members of the youth team and a couple of trialists did. Former Norwich City keeper Scott Howie played in goal for United in the first half, but Town's forwards, including former Pilgrim Mickey Nuttell, gave him very little to worry about in a very one-sided game that reflected the gulf between the two sides' respective positions in the football heirarchy. With Danny Thomas on the left wing and Brad Maylett on the right, Jason LEE was well supplied with scoring opportunities and he opened his pre-season account in the 13th minute with a shot that took a wicked deflection to beat keeper James Swann. LEE extended Boston's lead in the 28th minute by heading home a cross from Thomas. LEE got his hat-trick two minutes from half time via the penalty spot after Maylett was fouled, drilling the ball into the bottom left corner.

For the second half, eighteen year old former Arsenal trainee Chris Wright got some goalkeeping action, though once again Town posed little threat. Many United fans got their first glance of giant defender Ben Futcher and right back Lee Canoville recently signed from Lincoln City and Torquay United respectively. Trialist Peter Davies also started up front, alongside the slimline Daryl Clare - reputedly a stone lighter - though Clare showed as much chance of scoring against an Eagle Bitter Counties League defence as he had done of beating a Coca-Cola League defence last season. Youngsters Ryan Doherty and Jamie Stevens made up the numbers. The only goal of the second half was scored by a defender. A run down the left wing by Austin MCCANN ended with a cross that beat everyone and snook into the net at the back post. Straight after the match the Boston United players headed for their Essex training camp to prepare for the next friendly at Braintree Town on Wednesday night.
