Lincoln United Reserves 0-1 Reserves

Lincolnshire League

Report by Colin Woodcock

United's second string travelled to play Lincoln United, looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season and in the knowledge that three points would see them crowned as champions. They got off to the best possible start after two minutes, when Gary Walters took a quick free-kick, just outside the Lincoln United box to set up Anthony ELDING, who scored with a side-foot volley into the roof of the net from 12 yards. Further good play saw United dominate the half, but indifferent finishing from hard working front runners saw United end the half with nothing more to show for their efforts. After the break championship nerves set in for the first time this season, as Lincoln came back strongly.

Only resolute defending from the back four of Mark Melson, Nicky Reeson, Gary Pawson and the excellent Andy Lodge saw United weather the storm. Up front, Elding and Shaun Keeble continued to give their all, but at the final whistle, the solitary goal gave United their first ever Lincolnshire League championship. Youngsters Dane Thornton and Danny Harrison performed with credit on the day, when called into the decisive game at short notice and did enough to show that the Academy may yet produce United's stars of the future. Post-match celebrations were muted and the journey home strangely quiet as John Luffman's men contemplated their next two games, victory in which will see them complete the season unbeaten.
