The Tube Trip

If you have ever been a regular user of the London Underground then you will probably crack this week's puzzle pretty quickly!

The puzzle

The team are playing away on the south coast and decide the quickest way to get to the match is by train. They get to London and change on to the London Underground. Just as they arrive on the platform, their underground train closes its doors and moves out. They catch the next train and leave the exit at the destination station at exactly the same time as they would have done if they had not missed the first train. Both trains travelled at the same speed, no Acts of God were involved and they didn't have to rush to make up for lost time. How did this happen?

The solution

When they arrived on the platform they were at the rear end of the first train. They knew that the exit at their destination station was at the front of the train. So they walked down the platform and just as they arrived at the other end the second train pulled in and they got into the first carriage. So they had walked the length of the train at the first station, instead of at the destination station and thus wasted no time at all.
