Academy Success

5 May Last night the Academy beat Lincoln United 3-2 to win the Jacksons Workwear Lincolnshire Charity Cup.

Team: Peter Cook, Alan Ross, Paul Trinder, James Fletcher, Andrew Markham, Joe Harris, Dane Thornton, Danny Harrison, Daryl Hunt, Anthony Elding, Glen Kill.

Substitutes (not used): Russell Murphy, Darren Tate, Dave Donohoe, Richard Elsom and Thomas Fielding.

The Boston United Academy team last night won the Lincs under 18 Charity Cup in a thrilling final at York Street. In front of a crowd of about 150 the Football For Life lads took the honours in a highly competitive and intense match. The quality of football was of a very high standard throughout as the Boston boys defeated their Lincoln counterparts by 3 goals to two.
Every one of the 11 were on top form as Cook's lads turned on the style. In midfield the contributions of Dane Thornton and man of the match Danny Harrison were immense as the young Pilgrims showed a level of technical ability that the visitors could not match.

The home side opened the scoring in the first minute when Darryl Hunt headed in a Harrison cross. Midway through the first half the lively and skillful Anthony Elding missed from close range after good work from Joe Harris, Andy Markham and Dane Thornton. On the stroke of half time Lincoln United equalised from the penalty spot with Academy keeper Peter Cook just
failing to keep the ball out. Midway through the second period Danny Harrison scored with a free kick that Rivelino would have been proud of. With 15 minutes to go the tie seemed to be
over when the busy and effective Glen Kill arrived at the back post to head home a Dane Thornton cross. Back came the visitors to grab a goal that meant that the Academy team were in for a very anxious last ten minutes. However, Trinder, Ross and Fletcher held firm and Chris Cook's men held on for a memorable victory.

This was the Academy's last match of the season, but the players remain at college until the beginning of July. The players return to Boston United in August and resume their college course in September.

Spitting Rumour Denied

Steve Evans strongly condemns this type of false accusation and will be contacting the FA regarding these malicious allegations made by Steve White.

Shaun Keeble

1 April The following item appeared in the Lincolnshire Free Press dated 28 March 2000.

Holbeach footballer Shaun Keeble stands on the verge of Nationwide Conference football after a dream move just got better.

The striker was snapped up by Boston United last month after injuries threatened to derail the Pilgrims charge for the Dr Martens Premier Division Championship. But Keeble's five goals in as many games have kept the trophy very much in sight. Keeble (31) has never struggled to find the net and is Raunds Town's all-time leading goalscorer with a tremendous 209 goals in 304 appearances. He said: "I started when I was 15 at Holbeach Bank and then went to Holbeach St Marks. Alan Day signed me for Holbeach United in the 1987/88 season and I got nine goals in three games for the Reserves." When Day gave Keeble his break in the first team he banged in 38 goals in his first full season. Another 28 strikes the following season as the Tigers won the treble had scouts from Grimsby Town, Nottingham Forest - and most significantly for Keeble - Chelsea sounding him out. Only Cambridge United talked seriously but Day turned down a fee thought to be £3000.

When the boss left Carter's Park for pastures new the team largely disbanded and Keeble was on his way to Wisbech Town. Eight games later he was playing alongside Mark Lawrenson at Corby Town. Keeble fired 18 goals as they came runners-up in the Beazer Homes Midland Division and another 16 during the 1990/91 campaign as The Steelmen came fourth in he top flight. The came Keeble's highly successful spell at Raunds including another UCL title and a brush with Wembley (Raunds won the first leg of the FA Vase semi-final against Arlesey Town 3-0 then lost the second leg 5-0).

Keeble's second spell at Wisbech brought 32 goals and Boston United knocking for the first time with a £2000 bid. The Fenmen turned it down but last March accepted King's Lynn's offer of twice as much. He managed two goals in eight games before picking up an Achilles' heel injury, which dogged his progress. Keeble, who is also captain of Holbeach cricket team, said: "I've always been pretty lucky with injuries so I've never missed many games." The cash-strapped Linnets soon had to lighten the wage bill and Keeble's name was on the off-load list. That's when former Holbeach United boss Steve Evans got his man - this time for free after beating Grantham, Spalding and Rothwell to his signature.

Now the accountant for Holbeach St Johns firm John W Doubleday is looking forward to a crack in the Conference. He said: "I've probably got two more years left in me at this level and then I'll probably go back to my roots at Holbeach St Marks or Holbeach Bank." In fact his family roots probably had a big say on his footballing career - dad Ish and uncle Stuart were Holbeach United stalwarts while uncle Brian played for Grimsby Town. Cousin Nick is a Spalding United centre-half. Just watch out for Shaun's sons Jordan (2) and Jack (1) as stars of the future!

Boston United academy starts the search for new football talent

11th March The successful Boston United Football for Life scheme is planning its next trials day for boys interested in joining in September 2000.

The scheme which is now well established and in its third year, is run by the Boston United Football Academy in partnership with Boston College. It provides some 20 - 25 boys a year with the chance to develop their football skills and attempt to break into a career in football, whilst working towards a vocational sports qualification.

The Academy lads train five times a week under the tutelage of local soccer legend and youth development officer, Chris Cook. They form an elite squad who play for Boston United in the Lincolnshire Services League on a weekly basis. During each year of the scheme Academy players have broken into the United first team (notably Leigh Taylor and Ross Nicholls last year), and this year's rising star Anthony Elding has just graduated to the squad.

In addition to this, many of the Academy boys have made enough progress with their football this year to become regulars in the United Reserves and they also make up a significant proportion of the County Under 18 squad. Alan Ross is Captain for Lincolnshire with other scheme players appearing regularly, including Andy Markham, Dane Thornton, and Anthony Elding of course.

Boston College is delighted to be working with Boston United on the project and Dean of Faculty Chris Donkin, says "The great thing about the Football for Life scheme is that those youngsters who may not quite fulfil their Premiership dreams, should still leave Boston College with a nationally recognised BTEC Diploma in Sports Science. Some Academy students who have decided football is not really going to be a career option have already progressed to University to continue their studies. They should end up being highly qualified for a range of jobs in the sports and leisure industries. The scheme allows them to have a go at making it in football without giving up post-16 education."

Competitive football trials for this September's intake will take place in Boston on Saturday 29 April. Boys aged between 15 and 17 who are interested in joining the scheme need to fill in an application form, available from the College in Skirbeck Road, or from the new Boston College Centre in Boston Market Place (opposite Boots). Or you can request a form by telephoning 01205-313218 or 01205-362031. Alternatively contact the College Head of Sport Mr John Rees via e-mail at johnrees@boston.ac.uk

FA Investigation

16th February The Daily Telegraph featured the following article by Richard Luscombe today.

The Football Association are to investigate the match between Dr Martens League leaders Boston United and Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday, which was marred by a brawl involving all 22 players and members of both teams' benches at half-time.

Fighting broke out after a niggly first half in which Boston came from behind twice to level at 2-2. A heavy tackle by Havant striker Nicky Wyatt on Boston defender Joby Gowshall brought a furious reaction from Boston manager Steve Evans who ran onto the pitch to protest. Other players and club officials soon joined in.

Lancaster Gate have confirmed that Cambridge referee Christopher Gawthrop's report on the match will be looked into, though it is not understood to relate directly to the free-for-all. Gawthrop booked six players and sent off Havant's Tim Hambley for a second bookable offence three minutes from time.

The violent incidents over-shadowed an otherwise entertaining Premier Division match watched by 1514 and could not have come at a worst time with the FA cracking down on indiscipline in the senior game. Gawthrop's report arrived at Lancaster Gate on the day the FA charged four Premiership clubs - Leeds, Tottenham, Chelsea and Wimbledon - plus three players and a club official with misconduct following incidents at the weekend.

An FA spokesman said yesterday: "A report into this match has been received and is being looked at."

Evans admitted: "Certain things occurred an and off the field that I feel do not have a part in football, but we rose above it." His views were echoed by John Blackwell, the Boston secretary, who said: " It was blood and thunder but a very entertaining game."

Gawthrop said: "The atmosphere on the field was very strange - something I have not experienced before."

Boston parading three new signings eventually won 4-2. They went behind to a goal by James Taylor after two minutes and equalised with a Peter Costello penalty 12 minutes later. Havant's Gary MacDonald and Boston's Shaun Keeble signed from King's Lynn last week, each scored just before the brawl.

Costello and Keeble both scored again in the second half to secure the win which keeps Boston 11 points clear of second-placed Bath City, who won 1-0 at Worcester through a 29th-minute goal from David Mehew.

Reserves Mid-Season Assessment

20th January Success is a word on the tongue of every Boston United fan, player and official as the long run-in towards the end of the season begins. This is no different within the, sometimes forgotten, reserve team camp. With over half of their season completed United's second string are still unbeaten and have their eyes firmly set on bringing the Lincolnshire League title back to York Street.

The title is a goal they have been striving for since the reserve team was formed eight seasons ago but this year under the guidance of John Luffman they have a new cutting edge. Some of this is down to the large squad which Steve Evans has built and his attitude of not being afraid to play first teamers in the reserves. A fact that manager John Luffman wholeheartedly supports, "A reserve team is there for youngsters to break into and for first teamers to gain form and fitness and this is how our reserve team is now being run and rightly so. So of course some of our success is due to the fact that the likes of Martin Hardy, Andy Kiwomya and Steve Appleby have all played important roles for us throughout the season. Not only have the appearances of such players added that extra bit of quality but have also inspired the younger members of the reserve team squad to some admirable performances."

Indeed the youngsters must not become a forgotten piece of the jigsaw. The likes of Leigh Taylor, Gary Walters, Ricky Southwell and Anthony Elding have all gained first team experience during the current campaign and are all now becoming pivotal pieces in the reserve team set up. What must not be forgotten is that on many occasions Luffman has had to field a team of all youngsters who have not let him or Boston United down. "They have all been willing to listen and learn to both myself and the senior players and on the field have been prepared to work hard for each other," commented a proud Luffman.

With just over three months of the campaign left the question is whether the reserves can sustain such high levels of consistency. "If all the players of Boston United Football Club keep showing the same hunger and attitude both on and off the field then there is no reason why we can't still be unbeaten when the season comes to a close," commented John who is obviously relishing the chance to work with such quality players. Let's hope that come May both Steve Evans and John Luffman are still in high spirits and that two championships have eventually found their way to the York Street trophy cabinet wherever it may be.

Dave Cusack

24th December Former Boston United Player Manager Dave Cusack has suffered a double neck fracture in a horror car crash in Essex on Monday morning, whilst returning to his home in Rayleigh, Essex. Dave's car skidded on black ice, overturned and ended up in a field. He was initially taken to Chelmsford Hospital, later he was taken to Romford's Oldchurch Hospital by ambulance with a police escort. On Thursday Dave underwent a very delicate five-hour operation, where the doctors planned to graft bone from his groin to his neck.

Dave is currently Football Director with Basildon United of the Schweppes Essex Senior League.

Townsend, Stride

23rd December BBC Radio Lincolnshire has reported that Steve Evans is in discussions with Andy Townsend and Brian Little of West Bromwich Albion, with a view to Andy Townsend joining Boston United for a month.

The Boston Standard has reported that Boston United have had a five figure bid for Burton Albion midfield player, Darren Stride, turned down by Nigel Clough.

Grantham, Appeal

22nd December Boston United's match away to Grantham Town on Monday 3 January 2000 has been designated a Category A match, which means that supporters will be segregated. Boston United supporters wishing to use the terraces should enter the ground using turnstiles 5 and 6 from the North End Car Park, and supporters wishing to have seats should use turnstile 4.

On 15 December 1999 Boston United appealed to the Lincolnshire FA regarding being thrown out of the Lincolnshire League Cup for allegedly fielding an illegible player (see item dated 15 December 1999). Boston United were represented by John Blackwell and John Luffman and there were two representatives from the Lincolnshire League. After considering written and verbal submissions the decision of the Board was:

  1. The appeal was properly lodged.
  2. The appeal be dismissed.
  3. The appeal fee to be retained.
  4. The Lincolnshire League to be reprimanded regarding the rules of the competition.

The Lincolnshire League asked for their costs to be paid but this was rejected.

Snow

21st December Boston United had an eventful return journey from Bath on Saturday. The team bus left Bath at 5.55pm and got stuck in snow between Bath and the M4, due to a jackknifed lorry. The police instructed the bus to wait in a layby whilst the road was cleared. After gritting lorries had cleared and treated the road the bus and other lorries were formed into a convoy. The bus cleared the snow near Worcester. Near Saxondale roundabout the bus developed a problem with its suspension and had to travel the rest of the way to Newark at 20mph. The people from Boston arrived back in Boston at 2.45am.

Meanwhile at Bath City their players were enjoying a Christmas Party, when the party ended some of the players had to spend the night in the dressing rooms as due to the snow they were unable to get home.

On Christmas Eve, Nickel, provide the entertainment in the Social Club.

Reserves

20th December Boston United Reserves match away to Lincoln United on Saturday was postponed due to Lincoln United being unable to raise a team. Lincoln United had telephoned Boston United at 5.00pm on Friday to say that due to the departure of five of their first team squad (Tony Simmons, Rick Wright, Brendan McDaid, Ady Barker and Andy Gray) to Grantham Town their reserve team players were required for their first team.

Academy Progress - a report by Chris Donkin

16th December As many of you know, the Boston College runs a Football For Life Scheme in collaboration with the Boston United Football Club. Under the arrangements for this scheme, 24 boys come to college to spend half of their time studying for a Diploma in Sport Science and the other half of their time as apprentice professional footballers. The coaching of the lads is taken by Chris Cook of Boston United. Last year was very successful from a football point of view. Five boys on the scheme played for the Boston United first team - these being Leigh Taylor, Ross Nichols, Danny Seager, Kieron Kelly and Ricky Southwell. However, on the academic side of things there were a number of issues. This year we feel that we have learnt many lessons from last season’s experience and the academic side of the scheme is now equally as successful as the football side of the scheme. Retention rates have improved and many staff based on the De Montfort site have commented that this year’s footballers are a lot better behaved. On the football side of things, Leigh Taylor (National Diploma Sport Science year 2) has again represented the Boston United first team and 16 year old Anthony Elding (First Diploma Sport Science) has become part of the Boston United first team squad. Five boys from the scheme have represented Lincolnshire in the under 18 Inter County Cup competition. These lads are Joe Harris, Dane Thornton, Andy Markham, Alan Ross and Anthony Elding.

The Football For Life team play (as Boston United) in the Lincolnshire Services League on a Wednesday afternoon and are currently near the top of the table. Another Boston College team, comprising of mainstream college students also play in this league, albeit in Division 2, and under the tutelage of Brendon Rooney, they are comfortably placed in mid table. To emphasise the link between the College and the football club this side compete under the name of Boston United Reserves. It is now possible for a late developer to progress from our mainstream provision to the Academy via the Reserves route.

The college student team recently reached the final of the Lincolnshire County Colleges Cup competition. Although our boys lost 1-0 to North Lincolnshire College, the team played well and were a credit to the college. Indeed all of our student teams have conducted themselves in an exemplary fashion and have drawn many favourable comments from opposition teams. The RAF teams in particular are always very impressed at the way our students conduct themselves when fulfilling fixtures against the various RAF base sides. This feedback is a great compliment to our staff (John Rees, Chris Cook and Brendon Rooney) who always make sure that the lads are kept "on task".

With many of the Football For Life lads establishing themselves in the Boston United Reserve team, the future looks bright for Boston United .... and for the scheme.

Golf

26th October This week saw Boston United build upon the success of their annual Boston United Invitational Golf Tournament. Moving onto new horizons and a new event, the inaugural Autumn Texas Scramble was held at Boston West Golf Club.

Facilities at Boston West continue to improve every year and players were able to take advantage of a break in the recent bad weather as they attempted to tame the course. Texas Scramble is a popular format but pairs is a far different proposition to that of a four-man team event. True, you have a "second chance" but if the first player is wayward, his partner is left with a "pressure shot" and with holes like the demanding par 3 third, this is not an enviable task.

The first nine holes in the morning saw half a dozen pairs around one over par gross with the surprise package of manager Steve Evans and Pat Malkinson well placed a couple of shots back. Over the back nine however, players began to feel the pressure and as the scores came in, Boston West members, Alan Green and Steve Larthwell headed the leaderboard with 63.7, ahead of Gary Frost and Ian Taylor on a countback.

Their hopes were dashed though at the death though as Colin Woodcock, playing with Boston West member Phil Walker came in with an equal best of the day, gross 74, nett 62 to win convincingly.

Highlight of the day was Alphonso Parla's superb eagle 3 at the par 5 first hole where he followed his huge drive with a three wood to five feet and made the putt.

Manager Steve Evans presented the prizes and kept all and sundry entertained with his usual range of "off the cuff" quips and footballing tales. The event was a great success and United now look forward to holding a similar event next year over Boston West's newly expanded course.

Leaderboard

  1. C Woodcock & P Walker 74 gross 62.0 nett
  2. A Green & S Larthwell 77 / 63.7

Forum, Reserves, Greg Fee

26th August Following the Forum last week Director Roy Hackford gives his personal views and the resulting messages which appeared on Pilgrims Patter.

"It was just over 12 months ago when I was asked to join the Board of Directors at Boston United and on that occasion I personally felt very proud; to have worked for the club over the last 25 years on a voluntary basis, raising money and helping around the ground. I believe my work had been recognised and rewarded by my appointment.

"As a Director I, together with fellow Director Colin Woodcock represented the Board at the recent Forum held in the Social Club. As many supporters will know, I will listen to any constructive criticism made about improvements, I myself will criticise points I do not agree with. But I believe the Forum organised last Friday was basically a shambles, I personally felt very disappointed for the majority of fans who had gone along to have an enjoyable evening listening to the ideas and thoughts of Steve Evans and Trevor Quow about his present squad and the future, and possibly Steve could have thrown in a few of his 'colourful' football stories.

"But a few supporters lowered the evening to a 'slanging ' match directed at the Directors and the General Manager. How could Colin and myself conduct constructive discussions about ideas and views? The comments being made were very heated with the supporters involved not accepting any type of reply.

"Unfortunately I do not have the influx of capital to help the club's financial situation, but I am sure with the success of Steve, Trevor, and his present squad, a good run in the FA Cup and continued League success that many of the downfalls we as a club have, could be corrected with the help of everyone.

"As one of the new Directors I feel my rapport with the supporters will help me get views put across to the Board of Directors for consideration, we all have Boston United at heart and want a successful club and progress to the Football Conference and further up the pyramid.

"In closing I would however like to congratulate Ken Fox and his assistant Richard Burton on the excellent work put into the Website, it must the envy of many Nationwide League clubs for its content and information."

John Luffman has taken over from Mark Shackleton as Reserve Team Manager following Mark's promotion at work, which has necessitated a move away from the area, John, has been Mark's assistant for the past three seasons. Steve Evans offered the position to John last week. The policy of the Reserves this season is to keep first team squad members fit and ready for action. John would like supporters who are unable to follow the first team away to come to York Street to support the Reserves.

Former player/manager Greg Fee is currently playing for Emley in the Unibond League.

Former players Darren Bloodworth and Trevor Slack have been appointed Manager and Assistant Manager of Wisbech Town.

Forum

21st August Last night's Managers Forum was compered by Chris Cook and the panel comprised Steve Evans, Trevor Quow, Colin Woodcock (Director and Company Secretary) and Roy Hackford (Director). Below are some of the questions and the answers given.

We seem to have lost a few directors since last season! What is the story and are there plans to replace them?

Since last season Stuart Bateman, Brain James and Michael May have resigned from the Board. Stuart resigned as the club's main sponsor was a competitor and he felt it was inappropriate for him to remain on the Board. Brian and Michael resigned for personal reasons.

We finally have a squad, which has enough strength in depth so that we shouldn't be too worried about losing a few players through injury or suspension. But how are we going to keep those players who don't automatically make the first team happy?

Players are aware they are part of a competitive squad, successful players are used to this and everyone wants to be part of a successful team.

Which teams are considered to be our biggest rivals for the league title this season?

In no particular order: Ilkeston Town, Gloucester City, Bath City, Worcester City, Burton Albion, Dorchester Town and Tamworth, but there could be some surprises.

Where can I get hold of the Old Boys Diet Plan, so I can build up a fine figure, which women find so attractive, like those on show during Martin Hardy's Testimonial match?

Steve Evans thought he was fat until he saw the dressing room for the match.

Following your display of obvious natural talent and eye for goal in Mr Hardy's end of season party I am interested in knowing a little more about your playing career, like what position you played, number of goals scored and, of course, how many times you were sent off!

Steve Evans played behind the front two similar to Ian Stringfellow and David Norris, he remembers scoring goals against Rangers and Celtic whilst being managed by Craig Brown, and he was sent off four times.

Does Mr Evans read all the Patter on the Web?

Steve Evans looks at the website most days together with other clubs websites and clubcall lines as he likes to gather information; he is one of British Telecom's best customers.

What is the break-even crowd for this season?

The club has planned for average gates of 1400. When Steve Evans was negotiating with players to sign for this season he presented them with the attendance statistics from last season's programmes and photographs of the Boston United supporters at last season's FA Trophy quarter final at St Albans. This was effective in players deciding to come to Boston United because of the support and the atmosphere generated at York Street. The club now needs the people of Boston to come to matches at York Street to justify the optimism.

We have seen 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 formations used during pre-season, is the formation likely to change dependant upon players available, opposition, etcetera, or is the formation likely to be fixed so that players with part-time training know what they are expected to do?

The club has players who can play in a number of formations, during training sessions the next match is discussed and the most appropriate formation is decided upon. The managers prefer to be flexible with formations.

What is the maximum number of matches we can afford to lose and still become league champions?

Steve Evans believes we lose a maximum of six matches.

There appears to be a large gap in playing standard between the Dr Martens Premier Division and the Lincolnshire League, which does not help the preparation of players from the reserves for the first team, should the reserves play in a different league?

If the club is successful this season Steve Evans will discuss with the Board the merits of the reserves playing in the Central Midlands League, which contains the reserve teams of Kettering Town and Nuneaton Borough.

The supporters present also asked the panel about club souvenirs and organised travel to away matches and the reply is anticipated to be in a future match programme.

New Main Sponsor

5th August One of Boston's major employers, Stantons Metsä Prima, has signed a sponsorship deal with Boston United, following Wards Brewery's ending of its sponsorship. Stantons recently joined forces with Boston United to renovate the Main Stand (now named the Stantons Stand), including repainting and new signage, and this association lead to the club approaching them when the opportunity arose for a new sponsor for the 1999/2000 season.

John Tong, Stantons Metsa Prima UK Country Manager, commented: "Apart from being one of the towns main employers, Stantons has always tried to assist and participate in the local community wherever possible. Last Christmas, for example, we realised that the town had no Christmas Tree so a few phone calls were made and we arranged for our parent company in Finland to send a tree to the town! Our involvement with Boston United began with our sponsorship of the stand; however, when the chance arose to become the main sponsors we realised this was a golden opportunity to support our local community in a very positive way. Stantons is a winning team and we are sure that Boston United will have a great season and we were very happy to support them for the coming season and possibly beyond."

The Board of Directors of Boston United Football Club Limited and those involved at York Street are delighted to have agreed a main sponsorship deal with Stantons Metsa Prima the worlds leading processor and distributor of timber products, and hope the relationship between the two companies will be longstanding and look forward to carrying the name of Stantons Metsa Prima up and down the country.

Boston United's Academy has been up and running for two years now and in August the new intake of 15 lads will be joining the existing nine who have stepped up to National Diploma Level with three of those (Ricky Southwell, Simon North and Ryan Collingwood) staying on for another two years at HND Level with a view to possibly going to university and gaining a degree.

Last season turned out to be even more successful than the first year with the Academy team winning The Lincolnshire Services League Cup, which was won for the second consecutive year, and the Jacksons Workwear Lincolnshire Under 18 Charity Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Sleaford in the final. Probably the biggest achievement of last season was the amount of Academy players stepping up to first team duty, namely Ross Nicholls, Danny Seager, Leigh Taylor and Ricky Southwell, and along with a few of the Reserve lads they never let Steve and Trevor down. The club know there is a big gap between the Lincolnshire League and the Dr Martens Premier Division, but the only way these lads are going to get better is to play with better players and at the highest level they can and with encouragement, not criticism, they can go on to become the future of Boston United without the club having to pay out large transfer fees.

Once again this season there are lads coming from all over the country, with Alan Ross coming from Nottingham, James Fletcher from Wittering, Philip Snell from Huddersfield and quite a few from around Lincolnshire. These lads mixed in with a few local lads will hopefully carry on the success the course has achieved in the previous two years. The football side of the course was not the only success, of the 25 students on the course 24 passed. Unfortunately this means we have to say goodbye to a few lads and the club thanks them for their commitment over the last two years, they are D.J. Wright, Danny Clayton and Ben Pell.

The idea of this scheme is to give hopeful young footballers the same chance of progressing up the football ladder at Boston United as League clubs do except Boston United put them through a college course to help them gain a qualification in Sports and Science Studies. The qualification may in the future help them obtain a position in the sports and leisure industry if they have not made it in the football world. The lads spend 15 hours at college and 15 hours training and playing per week.

Some of the lads don't take kindly to having to go back to school but without the backing of Boston College on the education side there would be no way the club could afford to run the course on their own, so success on the education side is an essential part of the course!

Some local companies have come forward to sponsor the lads in various ways, which the club is grateful for, but they still need more to keep the scheme going. Any sponsorship will be welcome, it does not have to be money, it can be equipment, clothing, food, time and space. If you have any suggestion on how you can help please contact Chris Cook on 01205 350144 or cookie@ccps.freeserve.co.uk.

Wards, Players

3rd June As reported in tonight's Lincolnshire Echo, Boston United's sponsorship deal with Wards has collapsed, due to the closure of the Sheffield brewery on 2 July. The sponsorship deal was worth £50000 with the second installment of £10000 due to be paid next month. Wards sponsorship of Sheffield United has also suffered the same fate. John Blackwell said: "It has come at a bad time for the club. We signed a five-year deal with them last year, and we have been really pleased with the way the sponsorship has worked out. It has been the best sponsorship we have ever had."

Ward's spokesman Steve Johnson confirmed that the brewery would be closing on July 2.
He said: "The Swallow group - who own Ward's - have taken the decision to disinvest from brewing as from July 2." And he added that the brewery were disappointed to have to end the projected five-year agreement. He said: "It is very unfortunate that Ward's will be closing.
The sponsorship is something we have really enjoyed for the past 12 months and we wished it could continue but unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, it cannot. We were looking forward to a long and happy relationship but it was totally out of our hands."

The Management Committee of the Dr Martens League have suggested the following make up of the Premier Division for the 1999/2000 season, to be ratified at the AGM later this month:

Atherstone United, Bath City, Boston United, Burton Albion, Clevedon Town, Crawley Town, Dorchester Town, Gloucester City, Grantham Town, Halesowen Town, Havant and Waterlooville, Ilkeston Town, King's Lynn, Margate, Merthyr Tydfil, Newport County, Rothwell Town, Salisbury City, Tamworth, Welling United, Weymouth, Worcester City.

Cambridge City may replace Welling United depending upon the fate of Barrow at the AGM of the Nationwide Conference this weekend.

Steve Appleby had the steel plate, which was inserted when he broke his leg last season, removed last Thursday. Steve was told to rest for a week after the operation after which he can commence training for next season.

Grass

1st June Work has begun on the pitch at York Street to prepare it for next season. The goalmouths and centre circle have been rotavated and new seed sown.

The rest of the pitch is due to be hollow tined, whereby a machine travels over the pitch with hollow spikes and extracts small pellets of soil. This enables seed, sand and fertiliser to be spread on the rest of the pitch and air and water to get to the grass, which is still growing.

The new seed then requires suitable weather to become a good surface.

Cambridge City may yet be reprieved from relegation. It is possible that Barrow will be removed from the Nationwide Conference at this weekend's AGM due to their financial difficulties, this would mean that Welling United would not relegated which could be extended to Cambridge City. Hastings Town are expected to play in the Dr Martens Southern Division next season and they may also amalgamate with their neighbours St Leonards Stamcroft.

In July 1987 Paul moved to Norwich City for £30000 from where he moved to Northampton Town again for £30000 in February 1988 and made 159 appearances and scored 7 goals. He joined Halifax Town in December 1991 for £30000 made 48 appearances and scored 7 goals. He moved to Burnley in February 1993 and made 31 appearances. He joined York City in October 1994 and made 24 appearances. In August 1995 he joined Scunthorpe United made 87 appearances and scored 2 goals, and moved to Cambridge United in March 1997. David was born in Edinburgh on 29 August 1964, he plays in defence or midfield, his former clubs are Leicester City, Leeds United, Bristol City, Birmingham City, Coventry City, and Northampton Town from where he signed for Peterborough United in October 1997.

Boston United had competition from Kettering Town, King's Lynn, Ilkeston Town and Altrincham to sign David Rennie.

Steve Appleby is due to have an operation on 28 May to remove a steel pin from his leg, after which he will be able to commence training for next season.

Contracts for Youth Team Players

2nd May Leigh Taylor, Ross Nicholls and Danny Seager have signed contracts for next season, Boston United would be grateful for anyone who could assist with sponsorship of their wages for the coming season.

Tim and Cindy Ruck of CMS Sports have agreed to pay Leigh Taylor's wages.

Danny Seager is an 18-year-old from London who moved to Boston to take part in the scheme and quickly became a prominent figure in the Academy setup. Chris Cook has never known a lad so dedicated to succeeding in the football world, even in his spare time he comes to the ground to train on his own and improve his fitness, which he doesn't really have to do because he is one of the fittest lads in the club. He was installed as Captain of the Academy side and all the lads look up to him. This sesason he has been a regular in the Reserve side and also been part of the first team squad on many occasions.

Ross Nicholls showed lots of potential last year and has been a member of the first team squad on quite a few occasions this year. Hailing from the Ipswich area Ross has now settled in Boston and would like to become a regular first team player.

They will be finishing college in June and if anyone would like to sponsor them or offer them work of any kind please contact John Blackwell on 01205 364406 or Chris Cook on 01205 350144.
