Where: Games Played (P), number of goals scored (G), the average number of goals scored per game (G/G), the most goals scored in any season (MS) and the number of seasons they were top scorer (TS). We need another Frank Bungay - 1.16 goals per game including 61 in one season!
Before the war there were a couple of outstanding goalscorers playing for the club. In 1934 Frank Bungay joined the club from Southend United. Despite being out injured for six weeks, he scored 61 goals in his first season, which is still a club record. This included goals in all nine FA Cup games that Boston played in 34/5, which is probably an FA Cup record. Next up was Wilf Notley from Bourne who joined the club in 1936 from Notts County and scored 135 goals in 157 appearances in his three seasons with the club.
After the war two strikers monopolised the goals for Boston. Local farmer Harry Sharp scored 88 goals in 156 appearances and Jack Stone scored 130 in 186 appearances. Stone was signed from Sheffield United for £250 - this was the first time that Boston had paid a transfer fee to a League club for a player.
In the sixties top strikers were Colin Smith, Jimmy Rayner and Peter Thompson. Smith scored a phenomenal 58 goals in 1961/62 as Boston swept to their first league title as they won the Central Alliance. Peter Thompson scored 42 goals in the 1966/7 season but was pipped to the top goalscorer spot by Jimmy Rayner with 49 goals.
John Froggatt was Boston’s top goalscorer in the seventies with 125 goals in 318 appearances. He was top scorer in 3 seasons before leaving to join former Boston manager Jim Smith at Colchester United. He returned to Boston in 1979 and later took over as manager.
The most goals scored for Boston United by a player in a game is five which has been achieved five times – twice by Wilf Notley, twice by Jack Stone and once by Brian Flack.
