FAO Ken, have you come across this one?

Gainsborough v BUFC
9.2.71
Mayflower Cup 1st Leg

In true Gainsborough style they cocked up the notes, stating the game was to celebrate the CENTENARY of the Mayflower sailing to the US........ ::)

However it does state the 2nd leg would be played at Boston later in the season.......any idea when?

They won this game 4-2, our team was;

White
Foster
Weaver
Smith
Gibson
Jobling
Croy
Bates (1)
Froggatt
Vinter (1)
Flannagan
Sub Creaser

Can any of our veteran supporters remember this short lived tinpot?

I'm sure there must be some Gainsborough fans who still talk about the Mayflower Cup. After all, they haven't won anything since.

Well I had a good look through my notes for the 1970/1 season and no mention. Nothing in my Boston United programmes for the season either. Obviously a major trophy! I wonder if Gainsborough still have it.

I'll have a trawl through the Standards in Boston Library next time I'm over (assuming there still is a Boston Library after the recent cuts to Library services).

Sadly I don't have the programme. For some reason, I just vaguely remember looking at the 71-72 fixture lists in that season's programme and thinking it strange that a second leg was listed without a first leg. The home programme prior to the game, Kirkby on 29 January, mentions the game and that it has been moved from 31st January to 2nd February but the next home programme, Netherfield on 12 February, only lists the result with no further detail.

Cheers, I'll have a look tonight.

I may well have the fixture list somewhere, to be honest there's that much ephemera in my stuff I might struggle to find it!
