The B-Ark / Re: Hyde FC
« on: July 20, 2010, 07:23:41 AM »

Apparently the game has been brought forward because of a request from Greater Manchester Police, due to the fact that both Stalybridge and Hyde were due to be at home on the same date.

If Manchester United and Manchester City were at home on the same day, I could understand the police requesting a date change; to a certain extent the same would apply to Bury and Rochdale. But Hyde and Stalybridge? I reckon the combined attendance will only be around 1,500 so something doesn't quite add up.

When the match does come round, it'll be interesting to see how many police are actually on duty in and around the stadium. My guess is not many.

The B-Ark / Re: Ex Boston players (x 3) in Charity Match
« on: July 18, 2010, 09:39:02 PM »

Match took place this afternoon. Finished 4-4 and rumours that it may be turned into an annual charity event.

Jason Lee played the first half for Forest and Julian Joachim played about an hour for Leicester. Gary Mills also put in a stint. Plenty of other well-known players around - Des Lyttle, Steve Chettle, David Johnson, Phil Starbuck, Steve Walsh, Gerry Taggart, Matt Elliott, Ally Mauchlen and Muzzy Izzett spring to mind - plus a load of others I didn't actually really remember. Someone called Duffield played for Forest and it rang a bell because of our ex-player Peter Duffield, though it I can't remember anyone of that name turning out for Forest. Izzett looks like he could still do a job for someone in non-league, and may have left the game too early, but generally most of the players had seen a lot better days. Matt Elliott has put a lot of weight on. Reasonable entertainment though - with a fiver admission and all proceeds to charity you really can't complain.

According to this article, Boston are expected to field eight, and possibly nine new signings for the match against Grimsby:

Have they got their facts wrong?

Have I been asleep all summer?

Or is there going to be a flood of transfer activity at York Street over the next 48 hours?

prices for friendlies
« Thread Started on Jul 9, 2010, 7:56am »

THIS IS FROM GAINSBORO'S SITE--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am happy to announce that we shall be charging £3 for all adults including concessions and over 16's and just £1 for under 16's at all of the friendlies pre season.
I do however have my hands tied for the county cup game against Brigg on the 24th July, where the prices will be as per our league games, although i will allow this to be a season ticket holders game and they are free. i will also allow under16's in free for this game.
Cheers

This is the way to get fans through the turnstiles, what an exellent gesture by the management of GTFC, Last year BUFC lost two home fixtures from the Unidump league,So season ticket holders lost out, were they compensated by a free admission in the plays-offs,  were they heck, How about the club doing the same as GTFC, What do other fans think ?.

I stand to be corrected, but I can't remember any other pre-season campaign where we haven't played at least one Football League club as part of the preparations. That is potentially another way to get people through the gate, as the names of bigger clubs tend to be more of an attraction to the paying public.

Looking at it in terms of preparing for the season as opposed to getting people through the gates, we're probably better off coming up against the likes of Grimsby, Sheffiled, Stamford and Belper. These matches will be closer to what we can expect on a week-by-week basis during the season. But we still accommodated pre-season games against Lincoln and Macclesfield last season, and I would have gambled on us playing either Rotherham (for obvious reasons) or Brentford (managed by Scott's brother) this time around. Still, none of this really matters - provided everything goes right from 14th August onwards.

The German midfielder Müller has to be in the running, considering he hadn't even played for Bayern Munich until last season and the fact that he became one of the leading scorers in the tournament. Goalscoring midfielders are hard to come by, but Germany seem to be better than most at finding them. Remember Lothar Matthäus?

Who is the player behind Ben Chapman and to the side of Howard Webb?

It might be Tom Bennett, but he looks a lot younger than I remember him.

I've invested in some sheep, to try and keep my lawn in trim and save the hassle of cutting it myself. But unfortunately there's a giant killer wood pigeon on the loose that keeps attacking my sheep...

Not sure I agree with much of this, but it makes an interesting read...

Matt Elliot sat in the away dugout recently, can't remember who it was with though?

I believe it was Hednesford.

The B-Ark / Re: Albert Jarrett
« on: June 30, 2010, 10:35:41 PM »
Remember him? Turned up on loan, played a couple of games, won us one, then buggered off?

Doesn't that description also apply to Eric Sabin? Whatever happened to him?

In Jarrett's case, I'm sure he came to us on loan shortly after we'd been knocked back on other loan signings by the Football League due to our financial predicament. I think there was a defender from Huddersfield involved. And at the time it was being put around that the move for Jarrett had only become possible because Steve Evans had personally paid his wages out of his own pocket.

We will get larger attendances... if we stay in contention for the Play Offs for most of the season. If we are comfortably mid-table, the lack of excitement will see gates drop off..

True, and if Gainsborough have a good season as well they may be even be able to fill a minibus for Boxing Day.

If that is the best that Capello can do, then he should pack his bags and jump on the first flight back to Italy. But the trouble is he won't, because like all the England players, he's on too much of a good thing in terms of his pay and conditions.

There's no doubt we have some good players. The role of the coach is then to mould those individuals into a team. Capello failed on that front.

If things are going wrong, the role of the coach is then to make changes to tactics and formations and to introduce substitutes wisely. Everyone in the country knows Steven Gerrard's best position - everyone except Mr Capello. And when we're losing to the Germans and need goals we take off prolific Jermaine Defoe and replace him with Emile Heskey! Why? Capello failed on that front too.

I'll finish this post with a word that hopefully Mr Capello will understand: Arrivederci!

Very good set of photographs.

I'm surprised by the fact that I seem to recognise all the players! At the start of previous pre-seasons the familiar faces have always been interspersed with lots of triallists who nobody seems to know. Last even we even fielded Danny Sleath in a friendly as "A Triallist."

Presumably though there will soon be a handful of new faces to bring the squad back up to the size it was last season?
