Woking 1-1 Pilgrims

Nationwide Conference

by Barbara Singleton

Lee Howarth's 50th-minute header earned Boston United a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Woking. In a match littered with 10 bookings, Howarth's effort cancelled out Scott Steele's 30th-minute penalty. The Pilgrims had travelled south looking for their first victory of the season. There was a minute's silence for former Pilgrims chairman Sidney Burgess. Woking won the first corner in the seventh minute when Lucas headed out Hollingdale's centre. At the other end Ormerod did well to intercept Stanhope's centre in the ninth minute as Nuttell came in. After 13 minutes both sides had a player booked - Watson for Woking and Howarth for Boston, presumably for an off-the-ball incident. Lodge's free kick after 17 minutes skimmed the heads of Stanhope and Nuttell as it went for a goal kick. Boston lost the services of Jim Dick in the 20th minute when he was stretchered off with a gashed leg. He was replaced by Simon Livett. Boston went close in the 25th minute when Livett's shot was deflected wide following Stanhope's centre. From the resulting corner Howarth powered a header over. Bastock came out to block Jay Martin's shot in the 28th minute. Woking were awarded a penalty when Bastock dashed to the edge of his area and was ajudged to have fouled Roddis.

Bastock received a yellow card and was then sent the wrong way from the spot by STEELE. In the 39th minute Lucas and Jay Martin were booked by referee Chittenden following a tussle for the ball. Watson beat the Boston off-side trap in the 41st minute, forcing Bastock to make a blocking save. Steele brought Livett down on the edge of the Woking box in the 44th minute and Raynor curled the free kick over the wall and just over the bar. On the stroke of half-time Boston had a penalty appeal turned down. Mark Rawle replaced Paul Fewings for the start of the second half. Boston drew level in the 50th minute when HOWARTH rose above the home defence to head home Lodge's corner. Hollingdale was allowed to run at the United defence in the 52nd minute before Hoyle got in a tackle. At the other end two minutes later Livett thundered a 25-yard shot over the bar after Rawle and Nuttell had set up the chance. In a Woking breakaway in the 65th minute Steele fired over. For Boston, Gowshall's long free-kick into the box was missed by the keeper. It dropped to Howarth but he could not get a good enough touch on it and Pitman cleared off the line. Boston won a free-kick in the 70th minute but Howarth headed Lodge's free-kick over. Rawle poked a shot just wide in the 84th minute following good work by Hoyle.
