Goole Town 0-8 Pilgrims

Boston United made an impressive start to their pre-season build-up campaign with an eight-goal drubbing of Northern Counties East League side Goole AFC. Manager Neil Thompson used the fixture to give most of his squad their first run-out of the summer, although the likes of Mark Angel, Simon Weatherstone, Graeme Jones, Lee Beevers, Alex Higgins and Ben Chapman all sat out the game with various minor niggles. Meanwhile, there were appearances for trial trio Danny Gay (Southend), Mike Edwards (Hull) and Scott Brough (Scunthorpe). Boston took a somewhat fortunate lead when Vikings centre-back Matt Daly deflected the ball into his own net, although the strike was later credited to Peter DUFFIELD.

Graham Potter, one of three new signings on show, then crossed for DUFFIELD to score United’s second goal. Ryan CLARKE added number three with an fine 30-yard strike which flew in via the underside of the crossbar, while goal number four arrived when Paul ELLENDER poked the ball home following Duffield’s low centre. After the interval, and a flurry of substitutions, Boston extended their lead on 53 minutes when Stuart DOUGLAS fired home after a superb pass by Duffield. Neil Thompson set up goal number six, chipping into the centre for DOUGLAS to fire home, before Neil REDFEARN added number seven from the penalty spot. The rout was completed when BROUGH rifled home a long-ranger in the last minute.

United team: Bastock (Gay 46), Sutch, Edwards (Hocking 46), Clarke (Rusk 70), Greaves (Balmer 46), Ellender (Greaves 70), Bennett (Redfearn 70), Rusk (Brough 46), Duffield (Logan 70, N Thompson 82), Logan (Douglas 46), Potter (L Thompson 72).
