Grimsby Amateurs 2-5 Reserves

Lincolnshire League

Report by Colin Woodcock

A couple of weeks ago, fellow title challengers Limestone travelled to Grimsby & Immingham Amateurs and were beaten 5-0, so United looked to have a difficult fixture on their hands. However, the team that took to the field would have held its own with most Dr. Martens League sides, and it came as no surprise when United ran out winners by a 5-2 margin. Lee Power gave notice of what was to come when he hit the woodwork in the first minute, and Paul Watts missed the target with two clear headers before United opened the scoring on 25 minutes following a great run by Adie HAYES, who lobbed the keeper after being picked out by a great pass from Nicky Reeson. HAYES then added a second five minutes later, heading in at the near post following a Gary Walters cross from the left. With half-time approaching, the home side were awarded a free kick some 25 yards out, and as the ball was delivered over the wall, Lee Skipworth, in the Boston goal misjudged its flight and stood helpless as it flew into the net. This brought an immediate response, and when the home keeper failed to hold a Power blockbuster on 35 minutes, WATTS was on hand to tap in the rebound.

After the restart, POWER, in a class of his own, soon increased the lead after latching on to a through ball from midfield general Paul Raynor. Totally dominant, United then had two further goals disallowed for offside before WATTS scored a carbon copy of his first after the keeper failed to hold a Gary Childs shot. Boston eased the throttle back a little and paid the penalty, conceding a scrappy goal when Skipworth was beaten at his near post. United now have four games to go, the next match coming at York Street on Saturday week (April 1st) against defending champions Limestone Rangers. Limestone still have a mathematical chance of catching United, but a victory at York Street would see United secure their first ever Lincolnshire League championship.
