Hull City 1-0 Pilgrims

Avon Insurance League

by Craig Singleton

A solitary goal from Lawrie Dudfield accounted for Boston United Reserves on Wednesday evening. Dudfield was on target on 57 minutes to fire Hull City to a 1-0 Avon Insurance League Division One East victory. Pilgrims manager Neil Thompson utilised the fixture to give run-outs to several first-teamers with a blank weekend looming. Boston opened well and home keeper Saul Deeney had to be alert to tip away Neil Redfearn's flighted free-kick. Boston had a further chance on 13 minutes when Tom Bennett blazed marginally wide after Jamie Heard had only partially cleared a teasing centre from Craig Smith.

Hull took a while to come into the game but after 20 minutes they went close when a Shaun Smith free-kick deflected off the defensive wall, meaning goalkeeper Paul Bastock had to be alert to claim the ball as Nathan Peat looked certain to pounce. Chances were at a premium for both sides for the remainder of the half although United were unlucky not to take the lead when Nicky Heinemann rattled Deeney's crossbar with a 30-yard thunderbolt which bounced to safety. The only goal of the game arrived on 57 minutes when Dudfield slotted home after Stuart Elliott and Steve Burton had combined to set up the chance. Boston didn't offer too much in response although they came close to equalising when Smith headed just over from a Bennett free-kick in the dying stages.
