This game brought back memories of the FA Cup game in 1954, which was won 5-4 by Blyth after they were 2-4 down with ten minutes left. This time the result would be different. The match was much postponed due to the wintery conditions, and it only just got the go ahead on an almost frozen pitch. Blyth took an early lead when CARTWRIGHT looped a header from the far post over Kevin Blackwell in the Boston goal in the 16th minute. Boston equalised seventeen minutes later when Brian THOMSON chipped the ball over Blyth keeper David Clarke. Blyth went back in front almost immediately when LIDDANE headed in a corner. The second half was just six minutes old when Blyth went further ahead. David BUCHANAN broke through the middle and shot past the keeper. At this point, Boston made a key substitution, bringing on the mercurial Dominic Genovese for Ray O'Brien. Shortly afterwards Clarke had to pull off good saves to deny both Genovese and Chris Cook. Bob LEE reduced the deficit to just one goal when he walked the ball into the net on 65 minutes. Blyth restored their two goal cushion when MCFADDEN cut along the byline and slotted the ball in from a very tight angle in the 71st minute. GENOVESE finally got on the scoresheet with a stunning long range shot with 15 minutes left, to make the score 4-3 to Blyth. McFadden then had a great chance of finishing off the game when he beat the offside trap and was in the clear, but Blackwell made a good save. Chris COOK levelled the scores in the 80th minute after intercepting a loose ball. COOK scored the winner when he slotted in from an acute angle right at the end.
